IntroductionROV Durrant Engineering situated at 5 Lindsay Road, Port Elizabeth, South Africa since establishment in March 1964, is a small engineering company concerned primarily with contract works. The present day RovD is not a general engineering works, RovD only undertakes projects in their areas of expertise. RovD specializes in certain niche’ markets namely; Automotive Industry; production line transfer systems e.g. rollerbeds, conveyors and transfer shuttles and elevators. More specifically RovD has developed and improved certain standard facilities over the years striving to fulfil the customers requirements i.e transfer shuttles, double scissors lifts, 180° turntables, end-pivot rollerbeds, four-post hoists, and heavy-duty side lift elevators. Many joint improvement projects have been set up to improve the specifications the customer comes to expect of the machines we build. Agricultural/Industrial Mining Industry, wool presses, screw conveyors and stock pile elevators. RovD boasts the distinction of being one of very few manufactures in the world who successfully designs and builds salt harvesters for use in the salt mining industry. As can be seen from RovD’s Agricultural/Industrial Mining products this company has a substantial wealth of knowledge regarding hydraulic systems. Hydraulic capabilities include circuit design, design and manufacture of hydraulic power-packs, design and manufacture of hydraulic cylinders and complete hydraulic systems seen in RovD’s mobile machines. A more recent addition to RovD’s expertise is the design and build of electrical control panels, PLC programming and SCADA software programming offered by the Electrical department. This department has recently been involved in some prestigious projects including the ‘General Motors Holden Australia – Vectra Bodyshop’, Daimler-Chrysler Assembly Hall – Selectivity Buffer systems’, Daimler-Chrysler Assembly Hall – SCADA system and BMW(SA) Assembly Hall Buffer systems.RovD currently employs 67 employees, occupies approximately 7800 m2 of premises and has a turn-over of 15 – 20 million Rands South African per annum. DepartmentsRovD boasts a highly specialized and experienced machineshop and boilershop. An electrical department was added to enable RovD to take-on turn-key contracts without relying on smaller sub-contractors, this has proven to be very successful and often the skills of our electrical personnel are called upon to assist in highly specialized PLC and SCADA programming projects. A paintshop as well as a sandblast facility were constructed to offer a more cost effective option and once again to reduce the uncertainty factors associated with smaller sub-contractors.
Our Projects Department co-ordinates the major projects and overseas the drawing office, which comprises a mixture of drawing board design and computer aided design, drawing packages used include Autocad R14, Autocad Light 97 and Autocad 2000. Project Management packages used include Microsoft Projects, Microsoft Office and Visio Technical.
